When and How to Repot your Bonsai Tree

Even with the best care possible, soil will eventually lack nutrients and your bonsai tree will need to be repotted.

When should I repot my bonsai tree?

  • Deciduous bonsai trees need to be repotted end of February/beginning of March
  • Pines and conifers need to be repotted in April
  • Indoor bonsai trees need to be repotted between Aprils and June

How often should I repot my bonsai tree?

  • Every 1-2 years for young bonsai trees as their growth is quicker
  • Every 3-5 years for older bonsai trees

How do I know if I need to repot my bonsai tree?

  • Remove the tree from its pot and check the roots: if roots circle around the root mass, your tree needs to be repotted

How do I repot a bonsai tree?

  1. Remove the tree carefully from its pot. You should see that roots are circling around the inside of the pot. This means that it is time for repotting your bonsai tree.
  2. Remove the soil around the roots. Be careful not to damage the roots during this process.
  3. Cut the longest roots leaving about a third of their length. Leave at least 30% of the roots untouched. Pruning the roots will control the growth of your bonsai, and is an essential step of growing a bonsai.
  4. Add a mesh layer at the bottom of your pot to prevent the soil from falling through the drainage holes. Insert a wire through the drainage holes to tie your tree to the pot.
  5. Add a little of substrate at the bottom of the pot. Add your bonsai tree and tie it to the pot with the wires. Add the rest of the substrate and make sure that it is compact enough so there is no hole in between the roots.
  6. Cut some leaves out to avoid dehydration of your bonsai tree. When pruning the roots, we remove part of the hydration faculty of the tree, so it is essential to relieve the tree.
  7. Water generously your freshly repotted bonsai tree.
